From the deeply moving and expensive catalogue:

I sometimes feel that I have nothing to say and I want to communicate this. (Damian Hirst)

You've got to be able to copy things faithfully before you can deviate. (Damian Hirst)

Art at this level is most definitely a business. Hirst is as remarkable for his personal fortune as for his artistic ingenuity. In Monaco he moves in elevated circles and brings an entourage that congregates in the evenings in the super-plush surroundings of the bar at the Hotel de Paris. Some of Hirst's party have been staying nearby at Bono's house. Hirst's art is rarely mentioned without some reference to just how commercially successful he has become. His diamond-encrusted human skull, For the Love of God, was offered, but not sold, for £50,000,000 in 2008.

With a fortune last year estimated at £235 million, Hirst is used to being asked about the relationship between his art and his wealth. "Money deserves respect," he says. "It can be as important as love... and it opens doors. You need to respect money because there are so many people who don't have enough of it." (Damian Hirst)

The morning after the party, I meet the man who had picked up Hirst's Coca-Cola can. "I've got two now," he tells me proudly. I recall that as a child I was told that the Queen has to be provided with a special, private lavatory when she travels. Supposedly, this is to prevent anyone stealing the loo seat and keeping it as a souvenir of the royal presence. For the moment at least, Hirst does not need his own loo, but clearly, for some he is now so exalted that even his litter has become art. I suspect he might be shocked by that.(Damian Hirst)

"It'd be nice to make lots of money but it's quite difficult, because every time I make lots of money I make a bigger piece that costs lots of money." (Damian Hirst)

"I can't wait to get into a position to make really bad art and get away with it. At the moment if I did certain things people would look at it, consider it and then say 'fuck off'. But after a while you can get away with things." (Damian Hirst)

"The best spot painting you can have by me is one painted by Rachel."
